People regard octopus as creatures of mystery, beauty, flexibility, intellect, maternal instincts and wisdom. Several experiments were made to test if the octopus really is thinking creature and scientists were fascinated by the results. One experiment claimed that the octopus was able to open a sealed, screw cap jar with a crab inside it and devour the creature inside. Crabs are the staple diet of octopus in the wild.
The octopus's habitat in the sea is usually the crannies and crevices on the reefs. They can squeeze themselves in small openings and then expand later once they get inside a spacious crack or in between the corals. This is the reason why people associate the creature with flexibility.
Another little known fact about the octopus is that, one the female has laid its eggs, about a hundred of them at one time; they will wait and guard their eggs until they hatch. They will continue to pump fresh water to aerate their eggs, supply oxygen and to prevent algae from forming around them. The mother octopus will not leave her nest; she will not eat and will continue to survive by consuming her stored fat and eventually her tentacles. Some survive and grow their tentacles back and some just die off before they can see their eggs hatch.
Octopus tattoos are usually found at the back or in the arms. Some people choose to have them on their backs to have a full detail of the animal present in their tattoos. The suction caps on the octopus's tentacles alone can make a very interesting design for a tattoo. Being a spineless and boneless creature, you can have an octopus tattoo drawn into other forms and figures. It can suggest so many things so its like having different tattoos hidden in just one form.
Another octopus feature that is most interesting is their eyes. Octopus eyes resemble closely to the features of the human eye and some believe that they can also show real human emotion without losing the wild animal characteristic of the animal.
There are so many varieties of octopus as well that exhibit unusual and vibrant colors. Tattoo artists can play around with their choice of color for the octopus tattoo. Some octopus species also have unusual and interesting patterns on their skin leaving enough creative room for the artist to have.
